Akufo-Addo’s Road Closed

The police have closed the road in front of the President-elect, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s, residence, leading to the De Youngsters International School at Nima, Accra to traffic.

Residents and other commuters who hitherto used that portion of the road would have to use the rear of the house or other roads near the Nima roundabout.

The Nima Divisional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Vance Gariba, said the move had become necessary because the area had become a security zone.

ACP Gariba said it was international practice that once a presidential candidate is elected President, steps are taken to protect him.

He said the National Security and State Protocol would ensure that the area was secure.

ACP Gariba said petty traders, and vulcanisers, who operate in front of the President-elect’s house, would also be relocated, adding that they have already been spoken to, of plans to relocate them.

He said the pavement along the President-elect’s house adjacent the Nima police station had also been barricaded.

ACP Gariba appealed to the public, especially commuters, traders and other road users, to bear with the police.

Correct Me If I Go Wrong – Akufo-Addo To Chiefs

The President-elect, Nana Akufo-Addo, has told chiefs in the Greater Accra region not to hesitate in correcting him if he goes wrong while governing the country. He also said he will need their advice in order to succeed while occupying the highest office of the land. Akufo-Addo made this known on Tuesday when he paid a courtesy call on the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs.

“In such an important job as this, I would need the advice of eminent persons like you. You are the traditional rulers of the Ga State. If I do something which is not in order, please do not hesitate to point it out to me. My doors are always open to you. I want all of you to help me so we can do a good job for all Ghanaians,” he added. He also called on the chiefs to rally behind him and guide him. - It will be recalled that, prior to his campaign tour of the Greater Accra Region, Nana Akufo-Addo called on the Greater Accra House of Chiefs to elicit support for his candidature.

“The elections have been conducted and, as you know, I emerged victorious. So, I thought it proper to come here again and thank you for your support and for the words of encouragement you offered me. I am truly grateful,” he said. “I thank the people of the Greater Accra Region for taking the message of the NPP to heart and for voting massively for the NPP. Before the election, we (the NPP) had 14 seats. We now have 21 seats, and I also had 52% of the popular vote in Greater Accra. So as we speak now, the NPP is the majority party in the Greater Accra Region.

I thank you and the people of Greater Accra for this massive show of support.” I’ll fulfill my promises The president-elect also assured to fulfill all the promises he made to Ghanaians prior to his election. “All the things I said I was going to do for the region in my campaign, I will fulfill it. They were not just campaign or platform talk. Amongst them include the construction of a harbour at Jamestown and landing sites at Teshie. We want Ghana to move forward. Kwame Nkrumah referred to us as the Black Star of Africa.

The Black Star has to shine for everybody to make it in our country.” On his part, Nii Okwei Kinka Dowuona VI, the President of the Greater Accra House of Chiefs, thanked Nana Akufo-Addo for the respect and honour shown to the House by his visit. “You called on us before the election, and you have called on us again after your victory. This shows us that you hold us in high esteem and we thank you for that.

Whatever we can do to help your Presidency succeed, we will do it. Ghana must succeed, so we can create a bright future for our children,” he added.

Call your supporters to order – Mahama to NPP

President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his appeal to leaders of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to call their members to order, following reports of attacks on some citizens and state properties.

The Police earlier said they had received reports nationwide that some NPP supporters “are attacking supporters of NDC in various parts of the country.”

The President on Sunday subsequently directed the security agencies to deploy and arrest any person caught in such acts.

Though he has also commended the NPP’s intervention on the issue, the President further impressed on the party’s leadership to be firmer in its decision.

He believes the development is likely to affect the country’s security if unchecked.

“Across the nation, we have witnessed incidents of innocent people being attacked, vandalization of state property and unruly behavior arising out of these celebrations.

"Supporters of opposing parties have been assaulted and threatened and some government properties have been attacked and destroyed. I must also say add that some of the NPP supporters have also been victims of this excessive jubilation. I had to subsequently direct security agencies to deploy across the country and ensure safety and security of all our citizens.

“I stated in my congratulatory call to President elect Nana Addo that we would have to collaborate in this transition period to ensure the security and safety of our people. I therefore urge the President elect to act firmer in calling their supporters to order and halt immediately the harassment and attacks on innocent citizens. I’m happy to note that a statement to that effect has been issued.”

Stop attacking NDC supporters – Police warn NPP

The Police had earlier cautioned supporters of the NPP to desist from such actions. According to the Police perpetrators of such acts risk arrest and prosecution if they go ahead with such acts of vandalism.

The Police in a statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs, Superintendent Cephas Arthur said “it
has come to the attention of the Police that some people are attacking supporters of NDC in various parts of the country.”

“The Police Administration wishes to caution those who are engaging in acts of vandalism and rowdyism to desist, as Police officers who have been deployed to maintain law and order will not hesitate to arrest and prosecute those who break the laws of the land,” the statement added.

President Mahama's Message To Ghanaians...

President John Dramani Mahama: Thanked the Greater Accra region for the rally. Dedicates the campaign and the victory ahead to the late President Mills. Says Ghanaians have absorbed the message of the NDC and will give the party another term. President Mahama called for vigilance ahead of the election. "We are confident that if this election is peaceful and everything is done according to plan, i am confident that the NDC will win this election come December 7."

He said the government has done its part by providing all the necessary resources for the EC and the security services. Unless there are some evil forces that are planning to unleash evil on this country.

He said in order to have a basis for comparison, the Mahama administration must also be given eight years. He said due to the work the NDC has done in four years , their opponents are hoping they don't get another four years but the NPP is not God. He said the NDC's education programme is solid and the track record is strong.

He said the NPP increased SHS to four years and did not provide a single classroom block for the students. He said the NPP is trying to pull him into the Free SHS debate but it will not wash. He insisted that progressively making SHS free is the best.

"Ghana must not adopt the free SHS on the desperate political promise of a politician who wants to be elected as president," the President said.

NDC has a solid programme that goes beyond education and encompasses tourism, jobs, energy and so on.

He said God's will will be done on December 7. "I will be the needle that will sow the cloth of Ghana together and above all we will make sure that Ghana continues to be peaceful and stable."

My Brothers and Sisters, I leave you with this message from Joshua 1:5 "No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you"

Nine Factors That Will Determine Winner In Tomorrow’s Election - Manasseh Azure Awuni Writes...

omorrow, Ghanaians will vote in a crucial election. The country will elect 275 parliamentarians and the President of the Republic of Ghana. There are seven presidential candidates in the race, but it is going to be a straight fight between President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has been tipped to push the contest into a second round, but I don’t think so. It’s likely to be a one-touch victory for either the NDC or NPP.

Below are nine main factors, which, in my opinion, will determine who wins in tomorrow’s election. This is a qualitative analysis, and it is my opinion.

1. Incumbency advantage

This has been an important factor that helps the governing party in Ghanaian elections. The governing party has money to spend. Yes, a lot of cash to splash around. This year, the NDC has the incumbency advantage, the spending power. The NDC’s billboards have dwarfed those of its opponents. The party, apart from almost monopolizing the advertising space in the media, also bought slots on prime-time media programmes to propagate its message. Apart from doling out cash and other goodies to buy votes (which the smaller parties also do in small quantities), the governing NDC also uses state-funded initiatives such as outboard motors for fishermen to canvass for votes. Some people vote based on what they get from the politicians.

President Mahama, especially in his last days of the campaign, was able to visit many areas to campaign because he flew in state-owned helicopters. The incumbent party also controls the police and other security forces. In a country where agencies of the state owe allegiance to the governing party instead of the state, the “system” works in favour of the governing party. The NDC, therefore, has the incumbency advantage in this advantage.

2. Incumbency curse

People often talk about incumbency advantage, but they forget that there is an incumbency curse. The general hardships in the country are not blamed on the opposition. When there is no water, it is the incumbent party that suffers. Unemployment, power crises and any other form of disaffection or frustration in the country have a way of affecting the governing party. The NDC will suffer incumbency curse and the NPP will gain from this.

3. Infrastructure

The governing NDC has built its campaign around infrastructure. I wrote a few weeks ago that borrowing money to build infrastructure is something any idiot can do. Anybody can borrow, build and brag. It is not a novelty, but not all voters are sophisticated enough to see governance beyond the building of infrastructure. For some people, development is what they can see or touch. For some of the rural folks, they cannot be blamed. To the farmer in a village near Damongo who wants to transport his farm produce to Tamale or Accra, he cares very little about the exchange rate. Their major concern is the road so if you fix it, they need nothing more. Infrastructure will play an important role in this election. The NDC will benefit from this.

4. Corruption

Corruption is the biggest sin of this government. Almost all the campaign messages against the government have an accusation of corruption. The GYEEDA, SADA, SUBAH, Woyome, Bus Branding, Ford Gift Saga and other scandals have dented the reputation of the NDC and their candidate. Ghanaians are generally very tolerant of corruption but corruption will influence the voting decision of some people in this election, especially the middle and the upper classes in the society.

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on the other hand, has been perceived as incorruptible. He is one of the most vilified politicians in this country. Even though allegations of all sorts thrown at him seem to stick with ease, his opponents do not add corruption to his sins. Contrasting this with his main opponent who has presided over a corruption-friendly government, the corruption factor will favour Akufo-Addo.

5. Candidate’s appeal

Some people vote based on the appeal of the candidate. The demeanour of the candidates determines how some people vote. President Mahama has a youthful appeal. It is not in vain when he does the Usain Bolt sign and other youthful antics. He appeals more to the “boys boys” and “girls girls” than Nana Akufo-Addo, who looks very serious. While President Mahama tweets and facebooks, Akufo-Addo recently said in a radio interview that he does not send emails. For this reason, President Mahama has an edge over Akufo-Addo in this regard, even though that appeal has waned since 2012 when Mr. Mahama first appeared on the Presidential ballot paper with “edey bii keke”.

President Mahama has also been projected as a humble man while Nana Akufo-Addo is said to be arrogant. Ghanaians are generally timid. And timidity is sometimes mistaken for humility and elevated above cardinal values such as honesty and trustworthiness in the selection of our leaders. A charge of arrogance can hurt the fortunes of a candidate even if those leveling the accusation cannot prove it. In terms of personal appeal, President Mahama seems to have an edge over Nana Akufo-Addo and those who vote on this factor will choose President Mahama over Akufo-Addo.

6. Fallout from Election 2012

In the 2012 election, President Mahama won with a slim margin. He had 50.7% of the total valid votes cast. He had 325,863 more votes than Nana Akufo-Addo. In the history of Ghana’s elections in the Fourth Republic, any candidate who won and sought re-election often dropped in his performances. If this trend is anything to go by, President Mahama’s percentage is likely to drop in 2016.

If someone voted for President Mahama in 2012, he or she may have more reasons not to vote for him in 2016 than those who voted for Nana Akufo-Addo in 2012. In 2012, President was not in charge for a long time. When he took over after President Mills’ death, he was the “darling boy” of many voters. President Mills’ death united the party behind him and won the party the sympathy of some floating voters.

In 2016, however, he has four years of not-so-impressive governance behind him as president. Not all who voted for him in 2012 may be happy with his handling of the economy, corruption, employment, power, etc. But because Akufo-Addo has not been in charge of these things, someone who voted for him in 2012 may not have a strong reason not to vote for him again. If all factors remain constant, the gap between the two will close because Mahama is likely to lose voters. These are people who may have voted for him in 2012. Those people may either not vote or they will vote for Akufo-Addo. So Akufo-Addo is likely to have the net gain in the fallout from election 2012.

There will be first-time voters, but looking at the general economic outlook and high level of unemployment the new voters (who are mostly the youth) will either shift towards the NPP or the two parties will share the spoils.

7. Ethnicity

Both the NDC and NPP have strong supports among some ethnic groups. The NPP enjoys enormous support among the Asante and Akyem, and some Akan ethnic groups while the NDC enjoys enormous support among the Ewes in the Volta Region and a majority of the ethnic groups in the three regions of the north. It is difficult to say who has the edge here. If either party suffers voters’ apathy in its stronghold, the opponent will greatly benefit.

As it stands, the NPP is likely to improve on its performance in the three regions of the North. This will be mainly credited to the Bawumia factor and the fact that some people in that part of the country are not happy with the performance of the president in the handling of the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA). When President Mahama first contested in 2012, a lot of people up north said, it was time for their “own brother” to be in charge. But it seems a number of them are disappointed in their brother. It is not clear how the NDC will fare in the Volta Region, but the party’s fortunes in the north are likely to reduce even though it will still win in that part of the country. The NDC is also targeting one million votes in the Ashanti Region, but it is difficult to say how close the party can get to that target, but from the northern Ghana  situation the NDC is likely to have a deficit in the balance sheet of ethnic politics. This is likely to favour the NPP.

8. The running mate factor

The NPP’s flag bearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia appears to have more weight than the NDC’s Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur. They are both economists but Dr. Bawumia expertise has shaped this campaign to a large extent. His lecture on the economy brought the campaign back on track when it was reduced to trivialities. He adds value to the Akufo-Addo brand and the NPP has featured him in their campaign commercials. His wife, Samira, is arguably the discovery of the 2016 campaign. Nana Akufo-Addo’s running mate adds a lot of weight to the ticket and appeals to the middle and upper classes. The NDC’s Amissah-Arthur, on the other hand, does not add much weight to the ticket of President Mahama so the NPP has an edge over the NDC as far as the running mate factor is concerned.

9. The middle class/floating voters

A majority of voters in Ghana have their votes on autopilot, as Pastor Mensa Otabil puts it. They vote for ethnic and regional reasons. Both the NDC and NPP may have 45% of these votes before they start campaigning. There are also people who vote based on prevailing conditions. These people are not part of the two extremes. Infrastructure and vain promises do not inform their voting decisions. They are the middle and upper-class people. Call them the elite. They are in the minority but they have a say in who wins. The NPP does better in elite constituencies and on university campuses than the NDC. And in this election, the decision of the middle and upper class as well as university graduates who are yet to get jobs is likely to favour the NPP.

Conclusion

From the above analysis, the odds favour the NPP. But the NDC has campaigned very hard in the run-up to the election. The virtual control of the airwaves and the splashing of government projects will sway people. This makes it an open race. But the NPP has more reasons to win this election than the NDC.

Prez Mahama’s Profile

With 'continuity' as his battle cry, President John Dramani Mahama goes into the December 7 polls as presidential candidate of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) very confident of securing re-election.

His strong Christian principles is playing into his campaign as he constantly tells his supporters , "God is on our side, we shall win this election."

Born to a political giant from Northern Ghana ( his father was the Late Emmanuel Adama Mahama who was the first Member of Parliament for the West Gonja Constituency, and the first Regional Commissioner of the Northern Region under President Kwame Nkrumah), Mr Mahama has carved an image for himself as a political heavyweight. rising from a Member of Parliament (MP) to a Deputy Minister, full Minister, Vice President and President.

The President has made the incredible socio-ecomomic infrastructure undertaken by his government, a major campaign message.

From education, to health, sanitation, electricity, water , Information Communication Technology (ICT ) and other areas of national development, President Mahama has touted the achievements of his government.

His argument is that having laid a solid foundation for economic development of the country, it is natural that he is given a second term to put on the superstructure.

His popularity appears to be soaring. Across the country, thousands have poured out to welcome him on his campaign.

On his campaign tours, he stated that the crowds that poured out to meet him far outnumbered what he witnessed in the 2012 election campaign, a testament to his belief that he will win the election in the first round.

His manifesto pledges include the establishment of farmers service centres throughout the country, develop an eco-tourism strategy for the Western wildlife corridor, introduce industrial salt production, caustic salt production and chlorine salt production, and the building of 20 polyclinics in Ashanti, Western, Eastern and Upper East regions.

Mr Mahama is politically crafty in his own style, his communication skills has played well for him in his political life.

Early working life

Before plunging into a career in politics, Mr Mahama worked as the Information, Culture and Research Officer at the Embassy of Japan in Accra.

He attributes his strong work ethics partly to the experience he gained from working with the Japanese who believe in hard work.

"The President had never been afraid of hard work himself, but the experience reinforced in his mind the importance of focus and commitment and reflects in his actions, effort and the dynamism that he brings to bear on the Office of the President," the Presidency website, www.presidency.gov.gh, says of him.

After a brief stint with the Embassy of Japan, Mr Mahama joined PLAN International as the International Relations, Sponsorship, Communication and Grants Manager.

Political life

Starting off as Member of Parliament for Bole-Bamboi Constituency in the Northern Region in 1996, Mr Mahama held various ministerial positions in the Rawlings government.

He had wanted to quit politics after the 2008 general election to pursue further studies abroad when he was picked by the then candidate John Evans Atta Mills to partner him as running mate in the 2008 presidential election, which Prof. Mills won.

Following the passing of President Evans Atta Mills on July 24, 2012. Mr Mahama who was the Vice President then was sworn in as President in the evening of that day, serving the remaining five months of the late Mills’ term.

Mr Mahama won the December 7, 2012 presidential election on the ticket of the NDC with 50.7 per cent of the votes and sworn into office on January 7, 2013.

Education

President Mahama, 58, was born on November 29, 1958.

He attended the Ghana Secondary School in Tamale for Ordinary and Advanced level GCE Certificates and then to the University of Ghana, where he graduated with Bachelor of Arts Degree in History in 1981.

He had graduate studies in Communication in the University of Ghana's School of Communication Studies, completing in 1986.

Mr Mahama also studied for a Post-graduate Diploma in Social Psychology from the Institute of Social Sciences.

Mr Mahama is a proud family man, married with children to Mrs Lordina Mahama, who has been a strong supporter in his political life.

Nana Addo's Profile

The Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, possesses an impressive record of national political activism and achievements that spans a period of four decades.

Starting actively from 1977, he was the General Secretary of the broad-based People’s Movement for Freedom and Justice (PMFJ), established to oppose the perpetuation of military rule in Ghana.

In 1979, he established the law firm, Akufo-Addo, Prempeh & Co while a decade after, in 1989, he established the Ghana Committee on Human and Peoples Rights.

With the advent of the fourth republic democratic dispensation, he became a founder member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) which he currently leads.

One notable activity that he is credited for was that he was an active leader of the broad-based Alliance for Change, which organised the famous “Kume Preko” demonstrations in 1995 against the hardships and suffering endured by Ghanaians under President Jerry John Rawlings.

National Service

Akufo-Addo was elected three times between 1996 and 2004 as Member of Parliament for the Abuakwa South constituency in the Eastern region of Ghana.

From 2001 to 2007, as Cabinet Minister, first as Attorney General for two years and later as Foreign Minister for five years, Nana served President Kufuor with brilliance and distinction.

As Attorney General, Akufo-Addo had the satisfaction of being responsible for the repeal of the Criminal Libel Law, a law that had hitherto been used to intimidate the media and criminalise free speech. The repeal has enabled the Ghanaian media to become one of the most vibrant and freest in Africa.

As Foreign Minister, he was fully involved in the successful ECOWAS peace efforts in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Cote d’Ivoire and Guinea Bissau, and was chairman of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council in 2003.

He contested the presidential primaries of the NPP in 2008 and got elected to contest the December 2008 presidential elections.

However, he lost the 2008 presidential election in the second round by 40,000 votes, having led in the first round by over 100,000 votes.

In 2009 Nana Akufo-Addo championed the expansion of the NPP’s Electoral College, responsible for the selection of a presidential candidate, from 2,300 in 2008 to 115,000 in 2010.

He was re-elected the same year as the presidential candidate for the 2012 elections, after obtaining 78.89 per cent of delegates’ votes.

In the December 2012 polls, he protested the wrongful declaration of John Mahama as winner of the 2012 presidential election.

He went ahead to appeal against the declaration of the election at the Supreme Court and although the court did not rule in his favour, he accepted the 5-4 verdict of the Supreme Court and decided not to seek a review of the decision.

That decision earned him widespread acclaim from Ghanaians, local and international organisations such as the United Nations, European Union and the African Union.
Nana Akufo-Addo was re-elected presidential candidate for the 2016 elections, after obtaining 94.35 per cent of delegates’ votes.

Biography

Born on March 29, 1944, in Swalaba, Accra, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was raised in Accra, Ghana’s capital. His father's residence in Accra was effectively the headquarters of the country's first political party, the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), after it was formed at Saltpond on August 4, 1947. Three of the Big Six (founding fathers of Ghana) were Nana's blood relatives: J.B Danquah (grand uncle), William Ofori Atta (uncle) and Edward Akufo-Addo, who became the third Chief Justice and later ceremonial President of the Republic from 1970-72, was his father.

Akufo-Addo had his primary education at the Government Boys School and later Rowe Road School both in Accra Central. Nana went on to England to study for his O’Level and A’ Level examinations. He returned to Ghana in 1962 to teach at the Accra Academy before going to the University of Ghana in 1964 to read Economics.

After graduating as an economist, he went on to read law in the UK and was called to the English Bar (Middle Temple) in July 1971 and the Ghana Bar in 1975.

He is married to Rebecca, daughter of the Speaker of the Parliament of the Third Republic of Ghana, the late Mr. Justice J.H Griffiths-Randolph. They have five children and five grandchildren. They are both devout Christians.

Legal and Business Career

After his call to the English Bar, he went to work in Paris, France, as a lawyer with a then renowned international US law firm, Coudert Freres, for a period of five years.

Apart from the welcome exposure to the dynamics of international corporate transactions, his stay in France also made him fluent in French, attributes which have stood him in good stead.

In 1975, he returned home to Accra to continue with his legal career. He joined the chambers of U.V Campbell from 1975-1979 and in 1979, co-founded the law firm, Akufo-Addo, Prempeh & Co, which has become one of the most prominent law firms in Ghana. He is acknowledged as one of the most brilliant advocates of his day, if not in the history of the Ghanaian Bar.

Nana Akufo-Addo was the first Chairperson of DHL, Ghana Limited; Chairperson, Kinesec Communications Company Limited, publishers of the Statesman newspaper, and the first Chairperson of the Ghana Committee on Human and Peoples Rights.

2016 Presidential Candidate

Nana Akufo-Addo was, on October 18, 2014, re-elected to lead the New Patriotic Party into the December 2016 general elections, after securing an overwhelming 94.35% of the total valid votes cast at the party’s presidential primary.

His closest competitor, Alan Kyerematen, obtained 4.75%, while the candidate who placed third obtained 0.90% of the total valid votes cast.

In his victory acceptance speech on the night of October 18, Nana Akufo-Addo assured the NPP and Ghanaians of victory in 2016.

Magoo Boys Join NPP In Suhum

ABOUT 200 supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) who call themselves ‘Friends of Magoo’ (Margret Ansei) – the District Chief Executive and the party’s parliamentary candidate for the Suhum Constituency in the Eastern Region – have defected to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) barely 24 hours for Ghanaians to go to the polls.

The NDC supporters unanimously declared their support and appealed to the electorate to vote massively for Frederick Opare Ansah, the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, NPP flag bearer, to win the parliamentary and the presidential elections.

The group, according to sources, has its members in the villages in the constituency, among who are said to be some NPP members who crossed carpet to the NDC in 2000 and have now decided to vote for the NPP.

Edward Bekoe, chairman of the group who announced the decision at a press conference on Sunday, said they formed the group in 2012 to support the current Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, who promised to help the youth when he was contested for the parliamentary seat but lost to Mr Opare Ansah.

Mr Bekoe indicated that when the NDC won the 2012 elections, the party abandoned them.

“The attitude of the NDC parliamentary candidate towards the party has created confusion and division among the constituency executives; and due to that we don’t think she can win the seat, that’s why we have decided to support Opare Ansah and Nana Addo who we see can move Ghana forward when given the nod,” Bekoe stated.

When contacted by DAILY GUIDE, Mr Percy Fosu, special assistant to Magoo, said the members are not those supporting her (Mrs Margret Ansei), but belong to another group.

Woyome Confirms Giving Money To Anyidoho, Others

Businessman Alfred Woyome has confirmed claims by the opposition New Patriotic Party that he gave monies to some key members of the NDC after he was paid the controversial judgment debt by government in 2010.

The NPP's communications director Nana Akomea at a press conference today alleged that the embattled businessman was very generous to leading figures of the ruling family including its general secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia and former presidential spokesperson Koku Anyidoho after he received the huge payment from the state.

In a counter statement on the issue, Mr Woyome admitted giving monies to some officials of the NDC but added that his financial support for the party predates the payment of the judgment debt to him.

"The support increased before 2008 and beyond.
Steve Kpordzi was repaid monies he borrowed to Mr Woyome personally.
Koku Anyidoho was supposed to refund a debt of printed party T-Shirts that Mr Woyome promised to refund on behalf of the Party," the statment said.

He however revealed that his office has been burgled in recent times and items stolen include the information which has been put in the public domain by the NPP.

Below are details of the statement

The office of Mr Woyome was broken into three times.

Computers, documents etc were taken away.

The case has been with the Legon Police ever since.

Juju was planted and sprinkled on the compound of the office.

The police have all the records.

Akomea now says he got some documents from Mr Woyome's office?

Some of those documents include the cheque studs he is displaying.

Mr Woyome has been supporting the NDC heavily since 2001.

The support increased before 2008 and beyond.

Steve Kpordzi was repaid monies he borrowed to Mr Woyome personally.

Koku Anyidoho was supposed to refund a debt of printed party T-Shirts that Mr Woyome promised to refund on behalf of the Party.

Business men also pay for NPP electioneering materials.

Don't they.

Mr. Woyome did all these for his party without expectations.

Mr. Woyome and his companies have never borrowed from the ADB.

All monies paid to Mr Woyome was paid legally as a result of a court order.

How Mr. Woyome spend his money is his own business, private and personal to him.

It has never happened in the history of Ghana or anywhere else where a private individual's personal life is abused in such a proportion blatantly.

Mr. Woyome will test the law.

The Court of Appeal found NPP cabinet culpable and the cause of the Judgement debt.

What is worrying is that EOCO headed by Akpadzi Mortey, The AG Department personified by Martin Amidu, National Security headed by Gbevlo Lartey used the EOCO law and obtained all of Mr. Woyome's bank transactions Countrywide and through Martin Amidu handed it over to the NPP to create the impression to Ghanaians and the whole wide world as though something has been wrongfully done.

Mr. Woyome is not a GoG official, he is not the Court, he is also not an armed rubber.

Never in the history of civilise Nations has the Judgement of a Court of competent Jurisdiction basterdised and criminalised.

Yesterday, Dr Bawumia and his wife also mislead the whole world on an NPP final Rally platform in the tradefair center by insulting and maligning Mr Woyome and his entire family.

Dr Bawumia was in the Bank of Ghana and worked with the research department that tested and passed the documentary Financial Document , termed the letter of Support, that was ascertained by Central Tender Review Board through a concurrent approval.

The NPP knows that this singular case will lead to the arrest of over 30 members of their Cabinet including Akomea, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, etc.

They actually pre meditated the crime as evidenced by the famous cabinet memo authored by Yaw Osarfo Marfo who testified in court and is on record to blame it on the rest of the cabinet members.

The Court of Appeals of the Republic of Ghana has clearly said Mr. Woyome was rightly paid while the Supreme Court says it was unconstitutional.

The International Courts and Tribunals are yet to come out with their decisions.

How then did Mr. Woyome loot?

We call on the AG to as a matter of fairness and the respect for the rule of Law pursue the issue of the criminal cabinet memo now without any further delay.

President John Mahama has nothing to do with this case as a Vice President nor as a President.

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo has a lot to do with it through the Akosombo cabinet meeting and subsequent decisions which included the illegal Chinese deals and the Barclays 100 million dollar loan.

The people in the NDC who were bent on covering Akomea and Co Cabinet and and tried to perscute me for the NPP thereby creating all these situations should be ashamed of themselves by now.

Mr. Woyome never said any where that he was going to expose anybody.

How ?

This is also one of the usual NPP concocted lies.

Alfred Woyome's lawyers and the Police are working on the case.

A cold case in the police station concerning the breaking into Mr. Woyome's office has become hot.

FULL STATEMENT: NPP Reveals Beneficiaries of Woyome’s GH¢51.2m Cash

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has released a list of some key members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) who allegedly benefited from the GH¢51.2 million judgment debt wrongfully paid to Alfred Woyome.

NPP Communications Director, Nana Akomea at a press conference in Accra Monday, said it was never the case that the NDC financier solely benefited from the judgment debt paid him in 2010.

He said Mr Woyome wrote down the names of all the beneficiaries of the money and noted the purposes for which they were going to be paid the money.

“Mr Woyome was very meticulous in keeping the records,” he added.

These beneficiaries, Nana Akomea claims are people who defended Mr Woyome even after the Supreme Court ruled that the money was wrongfully paid to the businessman and should be returned to the state.

“Clearly, the money that Woyome received, he made a huge payment out of it to NDC,” he said.
THE LONG LIST OF NDC BENEFICIARIES OF WOYOME’S LOOT

STATEMENT BY THE NPP

• On 8th February 2011, the NDC Greater Accra Regional Chairman, in a receipt penned in his own handwriting, Mr Ade Coker was given GH¢30,000 by Woyome. The handwritten receipt reads: “Received from Consul Afred Woyome an amount of GH¢30,000.00” Signed Ade Coker 8/2/11

• Aseidu Nketia, the General Secretary of the ruling NDC is also listed as a beneficiary of the Woyome cash. For example, on 2nd September 2011, he personally received GH¢20,000 from Mr Woyome. It was a cash cheque with serial number 727292.

• Koku Anyidoho received from Woyome personally a cash cheque of GH¢13,000, with cheque no. 809093

• GH¢60,000 from Woyome to Steve Kpordzie, who was at the time the Managing Director of ADB
• The Speaker of Parliament, Doe Adzaho is also listed as receiving GH¢10,000 from Woyome, from cheque no. 727745.

• GH¢42,800 payment for “30 Motorbikes NDC” on 11th October 2011 paid directly to Royal Motors with cheque no. 847428.

Good afternoon, Ghana. We have invited you again today on another matter that is of grave concern to the people of Ghana. A matter that partly explains why the NDC government has been able to burn GH¢248 billion cash but have very little to show for it. It is just one of those matters that give the strongest evidence that John Dramani Mahama can never have be trusted to fight corruption. Rather, he will continue to take proactive measures to protect those who are corrupt and have stolen cash from state coffers.

We are here today to show you documentary evidence why President John Mahama and his Attorney General were, first, not interested in securing a conviction over the Alfred Woyome create, loot and share matter and, secondly, why they have shown no serious interest to respect the Supreme Court order to retrieve the millions of dollars of Ghana’s money unlawfully given to Mr Alfred Agbeso Woyome.

What we will do here is to share with you a list of Woyome’s unlawful judgment debt booty. The list will blow your mind. But it will also explain to you why we are nowhere in getting him to vomit the taxpayers’ money he took when he was not entitled to it.

Fellow Ghanaians, between the year 2009-2010 the NDC Government paid an amount of GH¢ 51.2 million (valued at the time around $35 million) as judgment debt to Mr. Alfred Woyome, following his story claiming to have had a contract with the Kufuor government to help build stadia for the CAN 2008 football tournament, which according to him, was wrongfully terminated.

SEQUENCE OF THE WOYOME EVENTS

1. Woyome, an acclaimed major financier of the NDC, made a claim to the new NDC government on February 18 2010, claiming payments for work he claimed he did for the previous government in 2007-2008.

2. Without consulting the relevant members of the former government and only claiming advice from lawyers at the AG’s office and at the Ministry of Finance, Sports Ministry officials, the Attorney General, Betty Mould wrote to her colleague Minister for Finance on 17th March 2010 and 31st March 2010 to request payments to be made to Mr. Woyome.

3. The Minister for Finance on 6th April 2010, just one week after, instructed the Controller and Accountant General (CAGD) to process the payments.

4. The CAGD promptly on 7th April 2010 issued instructions to the Bank of Ghana.

5. The Minister of Finance on 12th April 2010 wrote to ask the Attorney General for further documentation on Woyome’s claim.

6. Due to the slight delay in the release of payment, Mr. Woyome filed his claim against government in court on 19th April 2010. The Attorney General put up no defense whatsoever in court, Mr. Woyome hence had the liberty to amend his claim twice, and shortly obtained an uncontested, default judgment on 24th May 2010 (one month, five days) for the amount in excess of GH¢105.5million.

7. The A-G now promptly entered into negotiations with Mr. Woyome and both settled on the payment of GH¢51.2m, to be paid in three installments of about GH1¢7million each. They duly filed this in court as “consent judgment” on 4th June 2010.

8. Strangely, just five (5) days later, on 9th June 2010, the A.G apparently had a change of mind, and went back to court, this time claiming Mr. Woyome did not deserve any payments, that the agreement was a mistake, and prayed the court to set aside the consent judgement filed 5 days earlier.

9. The High Court eventually on 5th September ruled that as per the terms of the consent judgement filed by both Mr. Woyome and the A.G, the government was to pay only “the due amount of GH¢17million”, while court went into the merits of the A-G’s writ.

10. Most strangely, under circumstances not well explained up to date, the A.G proceeded to “a pre-trial settlement conference” with Mr. Woyome on 7th December, 2010, at which they agreed that government will pay ALL the GH¢51.2m to Mr. Woyome.

11. The government through the Ministry of Finance, accordingly proceeded to pay to Mr. Woyome GH¢10m on 27th January 2011, another GH¢10m on 8th April 2011, and GH¢14.1m on 12th September 2011. This in addition to the earlier payment of GH¢17m on 6th October 2010 brought the total to GH¢51.2m.

12. After the final payment in September 2011, all was forgotten until the Auditor General reported the payments to Parliament late 2011. The resulting public uproar, anger and shock forced the government in early 2012 to arrest Mr. Woyome, resuming the abandoned court case against him.

The Criminal trial was completely botched. The presiding judge showed his frustration in his judgment by saying the Attorney General deliberately presented a poor case. In effect, the entire trial was a public show but with no sincere intention to get justice done. Even, a senior lawyer at the A-G’s Department, who received payments from Woyome, through his wife’s account, was not prosecuted, because prosecuting him would have led the trail to bigger fishes.

The Attorney-General who followed Betty Mould and was serious about retrieving the money and prosecuting those who stole public funds was sacked. He went on his own to the Supreme Court to get Woyome and others to pay back. He secured judgment but the government has not been interested to secure the monies involved.

Earlier this month, he won a landmark ruling at the Supreme Court to examine Woyome for failing to pay back the debt. The A-G fought against it and steps have been taken through the legal process to ensure that does not happen.

Mr Martin Amidu has said all the time that the President is more interested in protecting Woyome than protecting the public purse. He was ready to prove this if he was allowed to question Woyome in the witness box. But, that did not happen.

Fortunately for the taxpayers, we have been able to get our hands on evidence. Evidence from Woyome’s own office. Evidence from Woyome’s own accounting archives. Evidence bearing Woyome’s own handwritings, telling us incontrovertibly, a list of at least some of the key people who were paid by him.

You may all recall that Mr Woyome, at the beginning of is arrest, warned publicly, I believe on Citi FM, that if the NDC government dared to prosecute him he would mention names.

He knew what he was saying. He had been meticulous in keeping proper records of those he gave money to. With some, which we have here, he made them write in their own words, the amount received, when it was received, and got them to sign the receipt. Even where he gave just a cash cheque, he made sure that he kept a record of it in separate book. Beyond that he would write the name of beneficiary and, where necessary, the purpose of the cash on the cheque counterfoil or stub. The cheque stub is the small piece of paper left in your chequebook when you tear out a cheque.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have here with us, the original stubs, and in Woyome’s own handwriting. We will make them available to you for closer inspection. You will be allowed to scrutinize them and do your own cheques on them.

The list is a bombshell one, that shows beyond all doubt that the bogus judgment debts, running into some $300 million in the first two years of the NDC’s last eight years, were made for privileged persons in the NDC to loot and share.

We have with us, a bank statement from Mr Woyome’s account at the Agriculture Development Bank, ADB House Branch. It is a statement showing payments from 1st October 2010 to 15th April 2011, totaling GH$3,053,133.65.

On 8th February 2011, the NDC Greater Accra Regional Chairman, in a receipt penned in his own handwriting, Mr Ade Coker was given GH¢30,000 by Woyome. The handwritten receipt reeds: “Received from Consul Afred Woyome an amount of GH¢30,000.00” Signed Ade Coker 8/2/11

Aseidi Nketia, the General Secretary of the ruling NDC is also listed as abeneficiary of the Woyome cash. For example, on 2nd September 2011, he personally received GH¢20,000 from Mr Woyome. It was a cash cheque with serial number 727292.

Before that on 15th February 2011, a One Million Ghana Cedis cheque was paid into the Unibank Ghana Ltd account of the NDC. We have a copy of the exact ADB cheque, which carries the cheque no. 230051. Woyome’s bank statement shows that cheque was cleared the very next day.

1st May 2011, Koku Anyidohu received from Woyome personally a cash cheque of GH¢13,000, with cheque no. 809093. A few days after, on 10th May 2011, Woyome again gave Koku Anyidoho an amount of GH¢100,000 and the purpose is stated as “Koku Trip With President.”

There is also payment of GH¢60,000 from Woyome to Steve Kpordzie, who was at the time the Managing Director of ADB. This raises serious questions over propriety. What did the Bank Manager do to deserve a cash payment of that colossal amount?

In fact, the Speaker of Parliament, Doe Adzaho is also listed as receiving GH¢10,000 from Woyome, from cheque no. 727745.

There is also a GH¢42,800 payment for “30 Motorbikes NDC” on 11th October 2011 paid directly to Royal Motors with cheque no. 847428.

There are many others on the list. But, we believe we have given enough to show that there is every probability that much of the GH¢51 million given to Woyome was channeled through him for the party and some of its leaders.

Ghana’s public purse can never be safe under President Mahama ad his NDC. Thankfully, after 8 years of creating, looting and sharing, in a week’s time, the people of Ghana will be presented with an opportunity to end the bleeding of Ghana. Let us stop it now before Ghana dies. Corruption Kills! NDC is Killing Ghana!

Let us vote for Change to Fix Ghana Again!
Thank you.
