We Do Not Recognize Otiko Djaba As Minister - Nii Lantey Vanderpuye

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection Otiko Afisa Djaba may have enjoyed the numbers from the majority New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Parliament to get the nod as a minister, but the minority National Democratic Congress (NDC) said they will not recognize her.

According to the Member of Parliament for Odododiodio who is also as a member of the Vetting Committee, the general composure of Otiko Djaba does not qualify her to be a minister hence the decision by the Minority to abstain from her approval.

Minority NDC on Tuesday was emphatic that they would not be part of what they called illegality.

Minority led by its leader Haruna Iddrisu said the approval of the appointee who failed to enroll in the National Service Scheme (NSS) would amount to an illegality, arguing that Article 94 (2) of the 1992 Constitution is clear on the eligibility of anyone aspiring to be a minister.

Another concern of the minority was refusal of the now Gender Minister to withdraw a statement she made against ex-President John Dramani Mahama. Asked if she still stood by her description of ex-President Mahama as “wicked, evil and someone with a heart of the devil,” Afisa Djaba said she spoke out of conviction and would not apologize or withdraw her comments.

Responding to a questionon Onua FM as to why minority abstained from approval of the Gender Minister, Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye said “We don’t believe she has the candour to hold herself as a minister, her demeanor does not qualify her to be a minister, how do we entrust the life of the children and the aged in her care?”

He maintained that since the majority used its numbers to pass the Gender Minister, the minority will not have anything to do with her.

“The majority is already disappointing Ghanaians with the way they try to bulldozer their way. She was not the only one who appeared before us and has an issue. Others have apologized so why can’t she” Odododiodio MP lamented.

“She will not receive minority support, as far as we are concern she is not a minister, she should do her work, it does not concern us.”

It Doesn’t Matter Who Bought My 5 Cars

 Kofi Adams
National Organizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kofi Adams, could not state emphatically if he personally purchased the five cars alleged to have been seized from his home by national security operatives.

The 2016 National Campaign Coordinator for the NDC in the 2016 general elections; who is livid over the seizure whiles he is away in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), says what matters is that, the cars belong to him because they are registered in his name.

It is believed the vehicles, two land cruisers and three pick-ups may have been seized following allegations that some officials of the previous government have misappropriated some state assets including vehicles.

When the Host of Citi Eyewitness News, Richard Sky, asked whether he owned all the vehicles, Mr. Adams said “I am the owner of the two land cruisers and a pick-up. They are registered in my name. If something is registered in your name don’t you own it?” he asked.

But when he was pushed further, he now claimed ownership of all the five vehicles.

“I just want to cut a long story short by letting you know that everything is mine because they are not all registered in anybody’s name. They are not registered in anybody’s name or it’s not as if I bought them for anyone to register them.”

When he was specifically asked whether he purchased the cars himself, he said, “Is the purchase of the vehicle also in any argument now? Richard; is that why you called me? Are we contesting the purchase of the vehicles?” he queried.

‘Let’s be concerned about the seizure, not the purchase’

According to him, people should rather be concerned about the unlawful entry and seizure of people’s assets in their private homes in the name of national security, rather than who purchased the vehicles.

“A state vehicle cannot be registered in an individual’s name. State vehicles they don’t pay taxes on them, so they can’t be registered in an individual’s name unless it is sold or auctioned after a period of time, then the ownership is then transferred from the state to that individual; but that is not the case here either. It’s not a state vehicle that I bought; and it is not a state vehicle that was transferred at any given time; so that should not even be an issue at all.”

How did you come by five vehicles?

Mr. Adams said in his capacity as a national officer of a major political party, coupled with his previous engagements, he believes he has the wherewithal to acquire five personal vehicles.

“…You have just counted the number of things that I do; and I will be surprised that you will think that a national officer of a political party of my calibre, should not be able to have means of transport to move around the country to work, and that an officer of my level cannot have operational cars to be able to send people around to work. People who have used those vehicles know what they use them for” he argued.

Mr. Adams, who wondered what the cars are going to be used for, said he will resort to every necessary and legal means possible to retrieve his vehicles from the national security operatives.

“What they are going to them; are they going to break them up so that if I drive them I will go and die? Are they going to plant things in them? Are we living in a country where anybody can come to your home at any time and take things away? One is a personal vehicle, the others are operational vehicles that people use for assignments; and one particular vehicle contains a lot of things that I use with a lot of information; and taking that vehicle out in my absence is something that is quite serious and we must all follow up to get answers from the government” he stated.

“There are many options; we report to the police or we take legal action. If those who have taken them realize the folly in what they have done and return the vehicles with apology, we will look at that, and I will make sure that anything in the vehicle is returned intact. And the action that I will take, there are a lot of options available for me.”

The seizure

Narrating how the alleged seizure occurred, Mr. Adams said explained that, before he travelled to the UAE last Sunday, some six officials claiming to be National Security personnel visited his House on Saturday in an attempt to seize the cars in his absence.

He said he managed to stop them when he was called at a funeral grounds, and later confirmed that the men were not ordered to carry out the act by the National Security Minister.

He said he found it strange to receive a call whiles outside the country on Wednesday that the same six men with others, had returned to seize his five vehicles.

“I had to travel to Dubai for the function, so I left Ghana on Sunday, only to receive a call that sixteen military persons and some police officers together with four of the six who came the last time and a DVLA officer with a machine, came to the house, got into the yard, and insisted on getting the vehicles out.

The DVLA official had a system that could check the genuineness of the registration when you enter the number of the vehicle; he did so according to the Youngman who was at home then, and everything clearly indicated that these were vehicles that had been properly registered and did not even belong to the state.”

“So the advice was that they needed to go back, but it looks as if the taste for seizing vehicles was so high, so they insisted the Youngman must bring the keys for them to do a test on a particular one.

He told them he won’t do that; but one of them used the rear side of his AK-47 to hit him, and so he was frightened. Once he was walking into the room to pick the keys, they followed him forcefully, and whether he was picking the keys, they picked the other keys and tried each car to find out which one fitted and drove everything away.”

Meanwhile authorities at the Ministry of Defence have denied sanctioning any soldier to carry out such an assignment.

Ex-Prez Mahama Condemns Seizure Of Kofi Adams' Vehicles

Former President John Dramani Mahama has condemned what he refers to as “the unprovoked attacks on NDC functionaries and supporters”.

Citing the raid which was carried out by some men said to be from the military, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and national security on Wednesday at the premises of the NDC’s National Organiser, Kofi Adams, Mr. Mahama called for such actions to be put to an end.

“Yesterday the National Organiser of the NDC's residence was invaded by security men from the seat of Government, the Flagstaff House in his absence, in search of vehicles when they knew very well they were on the wrong path. This must end,” he wrote on his Facebook wall Thursday morning.

Speaking on Asempa FM, Mr. Kofi Adams disclosed that fifteen men in military attires wielding AK47s stormed his house and confiscated five vehicles from his residence at the Tema Golf City.

Three Pick-Ups – two belonging to his brother – as well as a Land Cruiser, and another car of a make he could not readily recall were taken by the soldiers who claimed were acting on the orders of the Interior Minister, Albert Kan Dapaah.

They reportedly added that the vehicles were suspected to belong to the state and were taken to the Flagstaff House.

The NDC’s National Organiser who is currently in Dubai stated that he personally called Mr Kan-Dapaah to enquire if he, indeed, sent any soldiers on that assignment, but the Minister answered in the negative.

I'll Complete Mahama's Housing Projects - Atta Akyea

The minister-nominee for Works and Housing, Samuel Atta Akyea says he will not abandon state housing projects started under the erstwhile National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.

He said he will ensure the private sector is encouraged to help government bridge the housing gap in the country.

Mr Atta Akyea, who is also the legislator for Abuakwa South constituency said he will suggest to the President that all new housing projects be halted until the completion of uncompleted ones.

“I laud the NDC government for tackling parts of Presidents Kufuor’s housing project…I will carry through with the constitutional requirements that projects started by previous governments are continued and completed by succeeding the government and I will even push further to suggest that we do not start new projects until these old ones are completed,” Mr Atta Akyea said.

While answering questions from members of Parliament’s Appointments Committee at his vetting on Tuesday [January 31,2017], the member of Parliament said he believed private sector could play an integral role in meeting the country’s housing needs hence will create favorable conditions to enable them provide housing at affordable prices.

He suggested that banks in the country provide flexible payment terms to enable more Ghanaians to acquire houses.

On protection of state assets, the nominee said he will consider creative ways of protecting state assets that will in the end ensure government make profits.

‘Accommodation for judges’

Reacting to a recent complaint by the Chief Justice, Georgina Theodora Woode that many judges did not have official residence, the minister-nominee said he will push for appropriate housing facilities for the judges.

‘Gov’t housing project’

The NDC under the leadership of John Mahama initiated a 1,500 housing unit project at Ningo to provide affordable housing for Ghanaians in a bid to reduce the country’s housing deficit of about 1.7 million.

The Ningo project was among the few he initiated to address the problem.

I Owe Mahama No Apology - Minister-designate

Minister-designate for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Madam Otiko Afisa Djaba has rebuff attempts by some members of the vetting committee to impress on her to apologize to former President John Dramani Mahama for comments she made a couple of months ago.

Madam Afisah Djaba was emphatic to the committee that she owes the former president no apology when she was referred to what Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyin, MP for Tamale North constituency labeled as “unfortunate and unpalatable” statement made against the former president.

The nominee is reported to have made some scathing comments about former President Mahama in the line up to the 2016 general elections.

The polyglot minister-designate was quoted to have said “President Mahama's time is up...President Mahama is extremely wicked and so he must step down...He has the heart of the devil. We need change, we need someone is passionate about this country. You have to vote massively for Nana Akufo Addo. We need change this year. Your time is up President Mahama,”

“…You have to step down this year so Nana Addo can take over the management of this country,'' She told a teeming crowd of NPP supporters during the campaign season last year.

But Madam Otiko, who is related to the former president, said her comments were made without any malice intended.

Asked if she would apology for her comments, Madam Afisa Djaba said she has no apology to render.

The president is my brother and I spoke from my convictions. I made the statement as a wakeup call for him. We are building a nation and he [John Mahama] was running for re-election and I felt the people who should tell him as it is were not telling him as it was,” she said.

Madam Otiko further explained that “When I said the president was an embarrassment, I referred to SADA. SADA is very dear to my heart. The incident of poverty in the three Northern region where my mother comes from is very high. But the president who comes from the North did nothing to help the region. It was an embarrassment”

“I don’t owe him [President Mahama] or you [Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyin] any apology. We are developing and building a nation” she firmly said.

However, the Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu interjected and in some way attempt to corece Madam Otiko to retract and apologize to the former president.

But the nominee, who is also the NPP's National Women's Organizer, strongly rebuff the call and maintained that “I don’t regret my comment. The president embarrassed Northerners and their chiefs have complained bitterly about that. When I talked about his [Ex-Prez Mahama] wickedness, Ghanaians were crying due to Dumsor and high tariffs.

When asked to dissociate herself from those words by the ranking member, she quizzed - “Are you trying to say that we cannot criticize? Are you saying that I don’t have my right to speak? My words weren’t an insults, it was a criticism!
